TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Among the 20 bills Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Wednesday was an election law with an amendment exempting presidential candidates from Florida’s so-called resign-to-run law.

DeSantis officially filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission Wednesday to launch his long-anticipated presidential campaign.

Several sources report that DeSantis will formally announce his run in a conversation with Twitter owner Elon Musk at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The conversation is set to take place on Twitter Spaces, a service on the platform that allows live audio conversations.

Florida’s resign-to-run law prohibits elected officials from qualifying as a candidate for another office that would overlap with their current term.

However, the exemption was added as an amendment to a broader Florida election law during Florida’s most recent legislative session.

According to the amendment, “Any person seeking the office of President or Vice President of the United States is not subject to the requirements of chapter 99, Florida Statutes, which govern candidate qualifying, specifically those which require the submission of certain documents, full and public disclosures of financial interests, petition signatures, or the payment of filing fees. This section shall take effect upon this act becoming a law."

It was long speculated that DeSantis would run for the country’s highest office on the Republican ticket, but he avoided saying as much. Now, he will have to outpace the race’s current front runner, former President Donald Trump, if he wants to take on President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee.
