The vacancy was created after the board voted to accept the mutual separation agreement with outgoing Superintendent Dr. Mark Mullins.

During his public interview before the board on Thursday, Schiller said that he believed that the interim position should be temporary and he stated that he was not interested in pursuing a permanent role if hired as the interim.

On Friday, Board Chair Matt Susin said that during his one-on-one conversation with Schiller he asked him why he wanted to fill the role in Brevard considering his past extensive experience with other districts, both on a permanent and interim basis.

“He said, ‘I want one last run.’ That’s what he said. He said, ‘I want to be able to do this one last time,’” Susin said. “And I think when you see that inside a person, that’s what was running.”

At this point, Susin and the district legal counsel will negotiate a contract with Schiller. He expressed a desire to start the next day after things are finalized, so he could step into the interim superintendent role as soon as Wednesday, Dec. 21, before the district goes on winter break.
