OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — One person was killed and over a dozen were injured in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on State Road 60 in Osceola County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash that happened around 6:16 a.m. involved a 2007 semi-tractor trailer, a transit bus carrying inmates and a 2017 Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Until late Tuesday afternoon, a portion of the highway at Peavine Road, just west of Yeehaw Junction, was shut down.

A witness tells FHP the crash unfolded when the Dodge Ram attempted pass a vehicle and moved into the path of the semi-tractor trailer.

Both drivers attempted to swerve to avoid a crash, but ended up colliding head-on. The transit bus then hit the semi-tractor from behind.

"One of the passengers in the Dodge Ram was pronounced deceased on-scene," stated Lt. Tara Crescenzi of the Florida Highway Patrol.

The drivers of the semi-tractor trailer and the pickup truck sustained critical injuries, but are in stable condition, Crescenzi confirmed.

The Osceola County Fire Rescue and EMS originally tweeted out that two people were killed, but later issued a correction.

The transit bus was carrying 23 inmates from a Polk County Correctional Facility, who were traveling to a work-release program in Okeechobee.

Officials said 14 people of those passengers were taken to hospitals in different counties with minor injuries.

The driver of the bus also sustained minor injuries, and remained at the scene.

Crescenzi stated that traffic homicide investigators are currently investigating the fatal crash and it remains under investigation.

As of 5:15 p.m. the road has been cleared.
