Fritz came to Volusia County schools in 2019, after his predecessor was also fired. But Fritz made it known last month he did not wish to have his contract renewed. His contract ends on Dec. 01, 2022.

The lengthy school board meeting Tuesday featured much discussion over terminating Fritz and finding a replacement.

After a brief break, the board’s chair announced he came to the realization Fritz did not want to work for the district any longer, and he entertained a motion for the vote to oust him.

“So, I was prepared tonight to methodically plan this out … for what was best for our district,” Chairman Ruben Colon said, “and we had conversation.”

“We talked about it,” he continued. “But during the break, Dr. Fritz made it very clear to me that he does not want to be here … by his actions. So, with that said, I will support the motion tonight. It’s not what I came here to do.”

Fritz spoke following the vote, in which he offered his help to his successor.

“I’d like to thank all of the supporters and the folks who have helped me over the last two-and-a-half years in Volusia County schools," Fritz said. "It will still remain one of the high points of my 30-plus years in public education.

“You know, nobody wants change, but sometimes it’s necessary. And I will tell you that when I was hired here, I was asked to make change, and I think we’ve done that. And I think we’ve started this district down a path that it will continue to go.”

The interim superintendent is district Human Resources Director Rachel Hazel.
