With a 4-1 vote by Palm Bay city commissioners, new solid waste and recycling services will replace Waste Management.

About 1,260 Palm Bay residents casted their votes, and about 47 percent of residents said they need trash pickup two times a week. About 43 percent said once a week is good enough.

According to city officials, Republic Services will replace Waste Management starting on October 1, 2020.

The term is for 10 years, and the price tag originally was set to raise current prices by 126 percent. But the city was able to negotiate an increase rate of 91 percent, which goes up from $12 to about $23 a month.

Palm Bay residents Hector and Colleen Briand say they need more trash pickup because they're remodeling parts of their home.

“For twice a week, I'm willing to pay. We are struggling because we never have enough room. I usually fill my neighbor’s garbage,” Colleen Briand said.

On the other hand, Palm Bay resident Sonia Avila says it's not the time to raise prices, since many people are still trying to get back to normal after the pandemic.

“I don't know many people that are for it. My husband is the one that pays the bill, and he's always complaining about how expensive it's gotten,” she said.

Republic Services is offering a one-time, no-cost swap out to a 35 gallon cart or 96 gallon carts.
