UMATILLA, Fla. — Arson is suspected in a fire that damaged two vehicles belonging to an off-duty deputy early Wednesday.

At about 4:30 a.m., Lake County firefighters and the Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a Umatilla home. While en route, deputies were told that two personal vehicles belonging to an off-duty Lake County deputy were set on fire.

One was destroyed, and the other was damaged, Fire Rescue said. No one was injured.

"I'm sure everybody worries about it," said Christine Wightman, a Umatilla-area resident. "If there's no discriminating, you don't know why they're doing it or who they’re going after or what the reason is."

State and county Fire Marshals are working to determine whether this arson case is related to several other fires suspected of being intentionally set in the Umatilla area since Saturday.

"We're talking about human lives here, and that's what makes this scary and that's why we're going to do everything in our power to get this guy off the streets," Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Fred Jones said.

If you have any information on the arson cases, you're urged to call 1-877-NOARSON.
