ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Police Department says the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy in downtown Orlando may have stemmed from an attempted theft.

Officials say the January 2 shooting is the first homicide in downtown Orlando in 2019.

Denim Williams, 16, was found with gunshot wounds at the 800 block of Polk Street near Jefferson Street in the Parramore neighborhood late Wednesday morning. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say a husband and wife were trying to sell a phone on Polk Street. According to police, preliminary information revealed Williams are allegedly attempted to steal the phone -- that's when the husband reportedly shot Williams.

Police say the husband and wife involved are cooperating with authorities.

The investigation is ongoing. No word yet if officials plan to charge anyone in Williams's death.
