Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, the highly anticipated new attraction, will officially open to the public on May 27, Disney announced Monday.

Cosmic Rewind, which takes over the former Universe of Energy pavilion, will be part of the new Wonders of Xandar pavilion. The backstory is that the inhabitants of planet Xandar have come to Earth and share their culture and technology with the visitors of the pavilion.

Visitors will begin their adventure learning about Xandar before “everything goes sideways” and they are pulled into a thrilling, intergalactic mission by the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Cosmic Rewind will be Epcot’s first roller coaster and the first Disney coaster to feature a reverse launch. It will also be one of the longest enclosed coasters in the world.

The attraction will also feature new “omnicoaster” vehicles that can rotate 360 degrees, turning riders toward the action along the track.

In the weeks leading up to the opening date announcement, Disney had been releasing more sneak peeks at the attraction. Last week, the company shared a first look at an area of the queue called the Galaxarium, a planetarium-like space where planets and stars will be showcased.

Other peeks have included a photo of the sign for the attraction’s adjacent gift shop called Treasures of Xandar as well as a video from Walt Disney Imagineering of the load station.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is part of a multiyear, multiphase transformation of Epcot. Other new additions to the park have included Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure in the France pavilion, Space 220 restaurant and the Harmonious nighttime spectacular.

The attraction’s debut also comes as Disney World celebrates its 50th anniversary, which kicked off Oct. 1.
