ORANGE CITY, Fla. -- Have you ever felt uncomfortable driving on a road at night when you can't see the signage?

One Volusia County resident wants the signs fixed before he will ever drive on Harley Strickland Boulevard in Orange City at night again.

Tom Wood wrote in to us this week:

"I have been traveling Harley Strickland for over ten years now, both day and night. The road signs are in such poor condition they are DEAD at night and can't be seen until you are 10 feet away! Who has control and upkeep? Why is this allowed to exist for SO LONG?  I was a sign tech for over 20 years. I would have been fired over these conditions."

Wood says he used to travel several times a week on Harley Strickland to go bowling, but now avoids the area.

"I hate this road at night. I hate it!" he said. "It's really a cut through for a lot of people to get to the shopping areas or avoid Saxon Boulevard."

Wood's issues with the road have to do with the signage and how they have deteriorated over the years.

"If you're unfamiliar with the area and you're on a strange road, what's the speed limit?  Is it 30, 45?  You don't know," Wood said.

He can even recall the first time he used Harley Strickland several years ago.

"That night I had to slam on the brakes because I almost went through a four-way stop!  I didn't see it until I was as close to that sign as you and I are right now."

Spectrum News 13 contacted Orange City government which maintains the road. Officials say that they are now in the process of replacing the faded signs along Harley Strickland Boulevard.

As a matter of fact, while we were out there last week, we noticed at least one speed limit sign in the process of being changed.  Officials say that all signs should be changed in the next couple of weeks.
