A Marion County teacher is back in jail, one day after he was released for interference with child custody, for having sex with a 15-year-old girl whom he claims he married in an exchange of rings and wedding vows.

Duane Adams, 54, was first arrested Tuesday, accused of hiding a teenage student from her parents. He was rearrested Wednesday on multiple charges, including sexual battery.

A neighbor, Caleb Gillings, said he saw Adams escorting a young girl inside his apartment on multiple occasions, while the apartment's screen windows were shrouded by shower curtains.

"I'd just seen them get in and out of their car. They didn't really talk to me at all," said Gillings. "He was an older guy; she was younger. I knew she looked really young but I didn’t know her exact age."

Oclaa police say the 15-year-old is a student at Francis Marion Military Academy, where Adams taught and coached.

The girl's parents said Adams had taken her to the Royal Inn hotel in Daytona Beach last weekend. They found pictures of Adams wearing a blond wig on the teen's phone.

At first, both Adams and the teen denied a sexual relationship. But on Wednesday, police said first the girl, then Adams, admitted to having sex on multiple occasions.

Adams told police they exchanged rings and vows in a private ceremony and were married, but he was booked into jail on 24 counts, including sexual battery and lewd and lascivious molestation.

"If that was my daughter, I would kill him," said Gillings. "I don't know. That's just crazy."

Adams served as Francis Marion Military Academy's athletic director, coaching teams to back-to-back national championships in orienteering, a sport similar to mountain climbing. The academy's principal said Adams was in the process of being terminated.

The timing of the arrest couldn't be worse for the charter school, which just announced Wednesday it was opening up a new military academy for Middle School students.

Police and administrators have asked any other students who may have had inappropriate contact with Adams to come forward.

Adams was locked up in the Marion County Jail on a bond of $176,000.

As for Adams' claims that he married the 15-year-old, anyone younger than 16 in Florida must obtain a marriage license from a county judge, with or without parental permission, in order to be legally married.

Adams' most recent marriage license was to a woman his own age in 2011. The couple divorced in December.
