LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Disney World has expanded the plan for its previously-announced affordable housing development to include more housing units, the resort announced Wednesday.

The plan, announced last year, included 1,300 units to be built on an 80-acre site on Disney World property near Flamingo Crossings Town Center. The revised plan will now include 1,400 units—100 more than initially announced.

Disney also announced Wednesday that the first units are expected to be completed in 2026. Groundbreaking on the project is set to begin next year.

“We hope to make a positive impact wherever we can in our community, so to be able to offer more units means even more Florida families will get access to attainable housing, in addition to creating new Florida jobs as part of the construction and operation,” Disney said in a post on its official Disney Parks Blog.

The update comes hours after the Gov. Ron DeSantis-appointed board of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (formerly Reedy Creek Improvement District) met to discuss ways to reshape the Disney’s special taxing district. The board said it would be “evaluating” a number of items, including developing traffic solutions, reducing district’s carbon footprint and developing affordable and workforce housing on Disney property.

Disney first announced the housing development in April 2022 as part of an initiative to address the affordable housing crisis in Orange County.

“The lack of affordable housing is affecting many people across our country, including right here in Central Florida,” Disney World president Jeff Vahle said in a statement at the time. “With this initiative, we’re lending a hand to make a real and meaningful impact in our community by tapping into the best of our company’s strengths.”

In November, Disney announced that it had selected The Michaels Organization to be the developer on the project. The New Jersey-based company, which has more than 400 communities across 35 states, will build and operate the property.

Housing units will be limited to applicants within a certain income range, including Disney World cast members and the public.

Disney plans to privately finance the development.
