What You Need To Know

  • Sunday kicks off the second week of early voting in Florida, and many people are making their way out to the polls

  • Polls in Orange County will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day through Nov. 6 for early voting

  • After that, you’ll have to cast your ballot before 7 p.m. on Election Day Tuesday, Nov. 8

For Larry McCalley, after the primary, early voting for the midterms has been on his radar for months.

“So actually I did not get to vote due to the fact that I am a poll worker, so this time I decided it’s not going to happen, you know, I am going to go out, I am going to vote early. I am not going to go out to request a ballot. I’ll just go vote early,” said McCalley.

And he is not alone. According to the Florida Division of Elections, over 43,000 Orange County residents have cast their ballots early as of Saturday morning. However, Orange County Supervisor of Elections says turnout is still down.

“Comparing it to the last midterm election, we are about 10,000 voters less in the early voting, but again we still have all the way until Nov. 6 for voters to early vote, so it is not too late to get out and vote,” said McCalley.

McCalley, who has been a poll worker for the last 40 years, is hopeful that more people will cast their vote ahead of election day.

“If you don’t vote, then you don’t really have a voice,” said McCalley.

He felt more confident than ever with his sample ballot in hand.

“There are some times when I voted where I was just like, you know, I don’t have a clue who this person is, I will just mark something, and that is wrong, you know, I want to know what I am putting my mark on this time so I did, I did my homework,” said McCalley.

It’s was an easy process for him walking into the Pine Hills library branch to complete his civic duty.

All he needed was his ID. Within five minutes, he was back outside.

“It’s as simple as that,” said McCalley, leaving the polls.

Back in his car with his ballot cast, he felt happy knowing he did his part.

“Get out and vote. Let your voice be heard,” said McCalley.
