MELBOURNE, Fla. — Police in Melbourne say an officer was saved by his bulletproof vest Friday when he was shot through a door while responding to a 911 call.

According to information from the Melbourne Police Department, officers arrived at the Suburban Extended Stay Hotel in the 1100 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, just before 5 p.m.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Lukas E. Alves, is facing charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault with a firearm and shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Officials said that at least one officer was reportedly having a conversation with Alves when he started to count down. Alves then allegedly shot through the door at the officers, hitting one of them, who was protected by his bullet-proof vest, investigators said.

"Grateful for our vests, thankful that he used good tactical positioning and making sure he's not standing in front of the door," said Police Chief David Gillespie. "Thank God he's going to be here to see another day."

The officer — who was celebrating his 26th anniversary on the force Friday — was taken to the hospital for treatment. His injuries are not considered to be life threatening.

The officer has not yet been identified.

Crisis Negotiation Unit and SWAT officers were called out to assist with the response.

Two other officers returned fire during the incident and have been placed on routine administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation, the release said.

Alves remains in custody without bond. His next court date is October 11.
