Fried stopped by an early voting location in Boynton Beach on Monday evening, waving at passing cars while holding a campaign sign.

As agriculture commissioner, Fried was the only Democrat elected to statewide office in 2018. She says she’s the best candidate to beat Governor Ron DeSantis.

“I’ve been in the trenches as a member of our Florida cabinet for three and a half years, taking on this guy, showing him what real leadership looks like,” Fried told Spectrum News. “If we’re going to win in November, we need to make sure that we have a qualified female at the top of the ticket.”

Fried called the overturning of Roe v. Wade a “central issue” in the primary and general elections: “If we’re going to get women to cross over, both our Republican and Independent women, they’ve gotta know that there’s somebody who is consistent and being pro-choice, and that’s the way I’ve been my entire life.”

If elected governor, Fried said on day one she would declare a state of emergency for women’s reproductive health care. She said she would also declare a state of emergency for housing and the climate.

Fried kicks off her statewide “Something New” bus tour Tuesday in Panama City and Tallahassee. She will tout her message of lower costs and higher standards for all Floridians at stops from the Panhandle to Miami through Election Day.

“We are excited,” she told Spectrum News. “No matter where we’re going in the state, down here in South Florida to the panhandle to Central Florida, we feel the momentum. We’re calling it the Nikki Wave that is happening all over the state.”
