ORLANDO, Fla. — Dozens of influential community leaders were on hand Monday to watch a screening aimed at empowering black women.

  • Cleo Speaks is new TV series aimed at African-American women
  • Women turned out to watch screening, listen to guest speakers

The event was called Cleo Speaks, part of a TV series giving women a platform to share experiences and perspectives on issues facing young African-American women today.

The women who spoke at the event, held at The Mezz on Eola Drive in downtown Orlando, are leaders in the community, including state Rep. Kamia Brown and former state Sen. Arthenia Joyner.

Attorney Ashley Wright said she learned not to ignore fear but listen to it.

"For me, I would say my biggest takeaway... is to feel the fear, recognize the self-doubt, and then do it anyway," Wright said.

The series is part of a new cable network channel called Cleo TV aimed toward young African-American women. Charter Communications, parent company to Spectrum News 13, sponsored the event.
