WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. — In Brevard County, law enforcement officers made a run for it, all in the name of helping out the Special Olympics.

  • Law enforcement participates in torch run for Special Olympics
  • Brevard-based police agencies also participated in run
  • Goal is to create awareness for Special Olympics

The ‘Flame of Hope’ torch passed through West Melbourne Thursday morning as runners headed up Minton Road to the city’s police department.

Several other Brevard-based police agencies also took part of the event. They are among the 300 Florida police agencies who participate each year.

The goal is to raise awareness for the Special Olympics.

“We offer free programs worldwide in 190 countries for people with intellectual disabilities of all ages,” said Jason Hart with the Special Olympics of Brevard County.

About 5,000 officers run alongside the torch as it passes through the state's 67 counties every year.
