COCOA, Fla. — The Cocoa Police Department is investigating a deadly hit-and-run after a man's body was found in the median of State Road 520 early Wednesday.

At about 12:15 a.m., a person found a man's body in the median of eastbound S.R. 520 near Varr Avenue, according to Yvonne Martinez, a spokeswoman for the Cocoa Police Department.

Police identified the person as Bruce D. Calkins, 56 of Rockledge.

Not too far from where Calkins' body was found, a patrol officer found a bumper of a black vehicle on the roadway.

About half an hour later, Brevard County Sheriff's deputies stopped a car in the area of U.S. 1 and State Road 405, Martinez said in a news release. The car was a 2014 black Honda Accord with front-end damage, including a missing front bumper. Police say the bumper found in the road matched the VIN of the car.

Jacqueice Darion Witcher, 33, of Titusville was charged with DUI through the Sheriff's Office. Other possible charges relating to the hit-and-run homicide are pending further investigation, Cocoa Police said.

Hit-and-run crashes are often hard to investigate. Florida Highway Patrol is investigating four active hit-and-run cases from 2016 in Brevard County.

In the county alone, according to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, out of 1,940 hit-and-runs involved 66 pedestrians -- two were fatal.

Cocoa Police is working to get video footage from businesses in the area of the fatal hit-and-run, because the suspect claims the car was stolen at the time of the crash.

Witcher will face a judge Thursday.
