As crews get ready for the big day, people around Central Florida are reflecting on their own memories of the historic building.

The Amway Arena holds a special place in their hearts.

Brooker T. Cooks takes his daily stroll right next to the old building where he used to work.

He said it was a great job.

"They fed us baked potatoes and steak at night on breaks, so it wasn’t a bad deal,” Cooks said.

For others, it’s a place where they remember seeing their favorite team.

Freddie Lee Burns is a big Magic fan.

"Going to see the game," Burns said. "Had a good time.”

Some residents remember the concerts they attended at the arena.

David Dawes saw one of his favorite singers, Neil Diamond, about 10 years ago, and said the concert was outstanding.

“I love music and he did a great show," Dawes said. "I walk by there many times and it’s hard to believe they are tearing it down.”

Another woman told News 13 she had great memories with her kids seeing Cher and New Kids on the Block perform.

Even leaders working on the demolition team remembered their favorite family outings.

"From Ringling Brothers Barnum Bailey Circus to Magic games to Disney on Ice with the kids, but we’ve already started celebrating some new and great memories at the new arena,” said Sean Flanagan, ZMG Construction's vice president of development.

Some are sad and don’t want it torn down, while others think it’s the right move for the city.

"Whatever they got planned, it’s going to be better," Cooks said. "It’s a growing world. Old things past away and new things come.”
