ORLANDO, Fla. — Out with the old, in with the blue?

What You Need To Know

  • New blue road signs have debuted at Disney World

  • The resort will swap out the old purple and red signs

  • The new signs match the color scheme that debuted for Disney World's 50th

Disney World has begun updating its road signs with different colors.

The resort's iconic purple and red signs, which have been a staple since the 1990s, will soon feature a new color scheme — blue, white and yellow.

At least two signs have already received the update. They were installed last week on Osceola Parkway and feature directions to the upcoming Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel experience and the updated stylization for EPCOT, which is now in all uppercase letters.

Another change noticeable on the new signs is lettering being centered instead of to the left.

The color scheme matches the blue that debuted last year on the entrance archways across property and at the Transportation and Ticket Center for the Disney World's 50th anniversary.

For some, the new color scheme might be an adjustment. After all, the old signs have been around for 30 years. The signs, which took inspiration from Mickey Mouse's colors, were designed by Los Angeles-based graphic design firm Sussman/Prejza.

At the time, the company was tasked with developing "a vehicular signing system that would be unique in spirit, clean, easy to follow, and capable of being expanded as the area continues to grow," according to its website

The same color scheme was also used for Disneyland Paris, known at the time as Euro Disney.

But for those who have a soft spot for the purple and red, fear not. With more than 1,000 signs across property, it's going to take Disney a little while to switch all of them out.

"Rolling out during the 50th anniversary celebration, expect to see these new signs pop up this year and beyond," Disney said in a social media post Thursday.

The change comes amid other updates around the resort. Cinderella Castle received a makeover for the 50th anniversary and EPCOT is undergoing a massive multi-year transformation. New attractions are also set to debut at the parks, including Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, an indoor coaster, at EPCOT and Tron Lightcycle Run at Magic Kingdom.
