IRVINE, Calif. — Maddie Musselman scored four goals for the second consecutive game as the U.S. women’s water polo team completed a three-game sweep of its exhibition series against Australia with a 14-6 victory Saturday at the William Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine.

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Maggie Steffens opened the scoring three minutes, 17 seconds into the eight-minute first quarter on a penalty throw after Tilly Kearns, who played at USC in 2019, 2022 and 2023, fouled Rachel Fattal. The U.S. increased its lead to 2-0 46 seconds later on a goal by Kaleigh Gilchrist, who played at USC from 2010-14.

Dani Jackovich, who played for Stanford from 2014-17, scored for Australia with 2:27 left in the first quarter.

Musselman scored twice in the second quarter and Jordan Raney once as the Americans took a 5-2 lead at halftime. Jackovich scored Australia’s goal. All four goals came on the power play.

American Jewel Romer scored the lone third-quarter goal.

Musselman scored two of the U.S.’ eight fourth-quarter goals. Raney, Steffens, Fattal, Jenna Flynn, Romer and Ryann Neushul also scored for the Americans. Alice Williams scored twice for Australia and Kearns and Sienna Green, who played at UCLA in 2023, once each.

U..S. goalkeeper Ashleigh Johnson made 13 saves and two steals.

The Americans scored on six of their 11 power play opportunities, Australia three of eight. The U.S. made all three of its penalty throws. Australia made its lone penalty throw.

The Americans extended their winning streak against Australia to eight games and increased their lead in the series to 40-12-2.

The U.S. opened the series with a 10-4 victory Sunday at Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta and won 14-8 Tuesday at Long Beach City College.

Musselman and fellow Newport Beach resident Gilchrist were among four players from Orange County on the 17-player roster along with Fattal of Seal Beach and Emma Lineback of Laguna Beach.

Musselman, Gilchrist and Fattal were all members of the 2016 and 2021 Olympic gold medal-winning teams.

The Americans will begin a three-game exhibition series against China next Saturday at Long Beach City College. The teams will also play April 22 at Long Beach City College and April 27 at Torrance Aquatic Center.
