BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Getting to the beach is no easy feat, even if it’s walking across the street.

What You Need To Know

  • It can be dangerous to cross SR-A1A in southern Brevard County

  • Two people were killed crossing A1A earlier this year

  • Residents Pam and Drew Brancati want a crosswalk at Cherry Drive

  • Transportation official says a crosswalk at Cherry Drive isn’t planned right now

Pam and Drew Brancati said traffic is bad enough that a crosswalk is needed at State Road A1A and Cherry Drive, south of Melbourne Beach.

“I worry about the kids,” Pam said.

Traffic has increased along A1A, and so have the speeds.

“Some days it’s like the Daytona raceway,” Drew said.

The Brancatis, who live across the street from the beach, said it’s too far to walk to the closest crosswalks, about a half-mile in both directions.

“I think we need a crosswalk, right here at the beach access (at Cherry Drive),” Pam said.

Florida Department of Transportation Public Information Director Jessica Ottaviano said the department is studying several areas of A1A to improve safety.

Earlier this year, two people were killed crossing A1A, south of Cherry Drive in Brevard County.

“FDOT takes into account numerous factors, including where pedestrians cross, the different locations pedestrians typically walk to and the number of vehicles traveling down the roadway, among many other contributors,” Ottaviano said. “Based on these factors, traffic data and the existing pedestrian accommodations in the area, a crosswalk at Cherry Drive is not recommended at this time.”

FDOT does plan to monitor the area for potential improvements in the future, Ottaviano said. This stretch is part of a larger state study looking to improve safety along A1A in Brevard, Volusia, and Flagler counties.
