The Sykes Creek Bridge has been closed since Hurricane Irma caused severe damage to it with no set date of completion in sight — until now.

  • Bridge has been closed since Hurricane Irma damaged it
  • Price tag expected to be more than $1 million

The U.S Army Corps of Engineers told Spectrum News 13 the new expected completion date for repairs is in April.

About 5,000 residents could be affected if the bridge were to collapse, because it has a water main pipe attached to it. The bridge provides water to Cape Canaveral and the Barrier Islands.

Officials say there were some manatee sighting delays, but they are on track. FEMA and the state reached out to U.S Army Corps of Engineers to make the repairs after the hurricane hit, and workers are out there almost everyday fixing what needs to get done to make their deadline.

Wayne White lives nearby and is one of 5,000 people who potentially could be without water if the bridge were to collapse.

“If we don’t have water, that won’t be good. They should fix it now because otherwise it would be a mess,” White said.

The price tag is expected to be more than $1 million.
