For the past three Brevard school board meetings, public comment time was used to talk about what’s on students and community members minds about guns.

  • Community members speak about guns at board meeting
  • Parents continue to express grievances w/ arming teachers

The only gun-related item on the agenda was the annual MOU or Memorandum of Understanding.

The MOU is two separate entities that will be working together between the School Board of Brevard County and the Brevard County Sheriff's Office to assign a school resource officer to nine new elementary schools.

But community members weren’t talking about that — they used their three minutes each to talk about being against arming teachers at their schools.

Parents like Daniel Batcheldor fear having guns in the classrooms will lead to a new kind of danger.

“We don’t know how those students are going to behave. I’m sure there would be situations that would be a situation where a student would get a hold of these weapons that is there ironically to protect them,” Batcheldor said.

While the item of arming teachers has not been in the agenda, students, parents and other community members tell Spectrum News 13 that they will be coming to meetings and commenting until the item is put on the agenda.
