ORLANDO, Fla. -- Police confirmed Wednesday that they're conducting a death investigation involving a 2-year-old child but haven't released many details.

  • Dispatchers got nonemergency assistance call before 7 a.m.
  • Family had recently moved to Washington Shores, neighbors say

The investigation is taking place at a home along Bethune Drive, not far from Columbia Street and John Young Parkway.

For neighbor Kenneth Randall, it was a shocking discovery this morning as his wife peeled back the blinds and saw crime scene tape two doors down.

"She said, 'Oh my God, it's a crime scene,' " he recalled.

Randall couldn't believe the investigation centered on that home -- the one where children are always playing in the yard and sat beside a little neighborhood lending library he helped build.

"The gentleman who lives in the house where the accident occurred, the incident occurred, helped to build the steps so the little kids could reach into the box," he said. "When we go for walks in the evening, [we] speak to them and say hello. Very friendly people."

A call came in to dispatchers for nonemergency assistance before 7 a.m., records show.

Orlando Police confirmed that a 2-year-old child died at the Washington Shores home, but no other details have been released.

By late Wednesday morning, the Medical Examiner and a police chaplain were at the scene. Officers, meanwhile, were seen going door to door, interviewing neighbors as well as the home's occupants.

Neighbors, including Randall, said the family at the home had recently moved to Washington Shores.

"It was shocking, something that occurred out of the blue," he said.
