Hibiscus Boulevard near Melbourne Square Mall is closed indefinitely after part of it washed out during Hurricane Irma.

That means thousands of drivers have to be diverted from the area.

A huge section of the road at Hibiscus and Gateway Drive, on the back side of the mall, washed out two weeks ago.

"I had no idea, I thought they were just doing some kind of road work or something," said driver Kate Witmer.

The roadway crossing over a creek washed out during Irma, leaving behind a gaping hole several feet across and deep.

The underground pipes are now exposed, some mangled after the damaging water rushed through.

Despite the prominent signs, drivers out of habit are turning onto the road leading to the mall, at the intersection of Hibiscus Boulevard and Gateway Drive, an area that sees more than 21,000 vehicles daily.

Combine this detour with the one just down the street on Dairy Road.

That's where weeks before Irma, a large downpour washed out the roadway there, forcing drivers to go around until it too is fixed.

Work has yet to begin to repair the road. Mall officials have no timetable of when it will be back open.

There are other entrances to the mall.
