ORLANDO, Fla. -- Disney World is ending its Walk Around the World program, the resort announced Tuesday.

  • Disney to remove Walk Around the World bricks
  • The commemorative bricks are located outside Magic Kingdom, TTC
  • Those who bought a brick under the program can buy a souvenir version for $10

As a result, the six-sided bricks outside Magic Kingdom and the Transportation and Ticket Center will be removed.

The bricks, which Disney committed to displaying until 2011, feature names, dates, special messages and other designs.

People who purchased a brick won't be able to retrieve their bricks because, according to Disney, "the bricks were not designed to be removed individually." Instead, Disney is offering souvenir versions of the bricks, which can be taken home.

Now through August 31, those who bought a brick under the Walk Around the World program, can visit Magic Kingdom's City Hall or Guest Relations at Disney Springs to verify their previous brick. They will then be given a voucher to use at Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. in Magic Kingdom or at the Marketplace Co-Op at Disney Springs, where they can buy a brick for $10.

If you can't visit Disney World, verification can be done over the phone by calling 407-828-2701 or by emailing guest.services@disney.com. Disney will then send a code that can be redeemed on shopdisney.com.

Those who didn't buy a brick the Walk Around the World program can still get their own commemorative brick. Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. and Marketplace Co-Op are selling customizable bricks for $29.99.

The removal of the bricks comes as Disney World makes improvements to the entrances at all four theme parks, including changes to the walkways, security screenings and tram loading/unloading zones.

Just last month, Disney revealed the transformation plans for Epcot's main entrance.
