An 8th place finish in the Class 4A boys 100 meter state finals last season has been more than enough motivation for Evans’ Darryl Gay this track season.

“Last year I wanted to get first in the 100 but I wasn’t able to,” said Gay. “So this year has made me come back even stronger to get first.”

The senior sprinters’ strength was on full display last Thursday. Gay clocked a 10.43 in the 100 at districts, that mark is the second fastest time in class 4A in the state. He then followed that up to also win the 200 with a time of 21.19.

“The good thing about it is he got some great starts, and got out ahead of the competition.” Evans boys track head coach Greg Thompson said. “He was able to remain technical throughout the race, so we’re looking for even greater numbers over the next two weeks.”

Even greater numbers because Gay feels like he can lower his times if he gets off to a better start in both races. Gay also does the long jump for the Trojans, but his favorite event is something he doesn't even run in the meets.

“Probably the 400 I feel like is the best,” said the FSU track commit. “Because it suits me better and I probably know how to run it a little more because I’ve been running it since ninth grade.”

With the track season winding down Gay has his sights set on winning gold, but if you give him the option to pick which event.

“To be honest I would pick the 4x4 because I feel like as a team, the four of us have come together and all want to accomplish the same goal,” he said.
