As Tropical Storm Harvey becomes a record-breaking storm, Houston officials are asking for more supplies for an additional 10,000 people who need shelter.

Donations drop off sites have been created in Central Florida to help those people. On Wednesday, Belle Isle City Hall will open its doors at 8 a.m. to accept donations.

People can drop off donations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Tuesday, Sep. 5. The city hall is located at 1600 Nela Ave.

A group of Belle Isle residents will drive straight to Texas to hand-deliver the donations they receive on Tuesday.

First responders from Central Florida are also out west helping the recovery process.

The Central Florida Urban Search and Rescue Task Force is in East Texas where they have been trying to rescue people from the floodwaters. The team is made up of first responders from several fire departments in Central Florida.

The assistant fire chief in Seminole County is leading the team of firefighters.

“I responded during Hurricane Katrina and Ivan, and I have to say with this particular Hurricane, Harvey, and the areas that we’re in, the devastation is just incredible, even compared to those two hurricanes,” said Mike Johansmeyer of the Seminole County Fire Department.

Johansmeyer also said the team has rescued at least 40 people.

“Just one word, basically a core relief that somebody is there to take care of them and get them to the ground and know that they are safe. They can continue on with their lives knowing they’ll have to rebuild, but the most precious part of them is there and the rest of it can always be replaced,” he said.

The help does not stop there. About two dozen volunteers with the Central Florida Red Cross are in Texas and Louisiana.

The volunteers drove to the area last weekend and they brought water and food. Volunteers expect to be there for the next few weeks.

If you live in Central Florida and do not have time to drop off donations, you can call the Red Cross to make a donation.

The number is 1-800-REDCROSS (733-2767).
