Rescuers continued to search Lake Fairview in Orange County on Thursday afternoon for the body of a boater reported missing overnight.

  • Search for missing canoer turns to recovery mode
  • Man reported to have capsized out of a canoe overnight
  • Man was with another man, who made it to shore

"We're in recovery mode," Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Deputy Ingrid Tejada-Monforte said.

Witnesses told deputies they heard a man yelling for help at about 2 a.m. on the lake near Edgewater Drive.

Sky 13, which was flying over the area, spotted a capsized canoe and a man floating in the water.

The rescued man said told deputies he and another man were "hanging out in the lake," Tejada-Monforte said, when their canoe tipped. They both tried to swim to shore, but only one made it.

Both men, whose names have not been released, are in their early 40s, the Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said. The rescued man was hospitalized in stable condition but is expected to recover.

Orange County Fire Rescue, along with aviation and marine units, continue to search Lake Fairview.

"We'll continue with the search until a body is located," Tejada-Monforte said.
