A man accused of hitting a Windermere police SUV and then leaving the scene is in the Lake County Jail after being on the run since last Tuesday.

Scott Mitchell is facing charges of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.

Mitchell waived first appearance on Wednesday. In court, a judge said Orange County Sheriff's Office deputies can pick him up by July 25, since it happened there. He has a warrant out in Orange County.

According to his public defender, Mitchell can bond out at any time if Orange County deputies do not pick him up by July 25.

Then there will be another hearing where the judge will decide to give Orange County officials an extension. If they decide not to, then he can walk out a free man because the case is out of Orange County.

He has a $5,000 bond.

Police said the incident happened on West Colonial Drive near Maguire Road in Ocoee. However, the suspect, Mitchell, was arrested Tuesday, July 18, in Lake County.

As Mitchell was being taken into the jail by deputies, he spoke to News 13 about what happened on July 11.

“I was scared for my well being, but I didn’t hit the officer, he pulled in front of me. I would never ever ram an officer or commit any kind of violence against the officer,” said Mitchell.

However, investigators said Sgt. Mark Destefano, who suffered minor injuries, gave them a different story.

The sergeant said Mitchell took off from the scene after striking the Windermere police SUV with his car.

Investigators also said Mitchell caused a second crash on North Hiawassee Road.

Mitchell claimed Tuesday evening he does not remember the second crash happening.

“I don’t recall hitting another person. As you can see from my face, I suffered from head injuries,” said Mitchell.

Mitchell has an extensive criminal history in Lake County that goes back to 2007. In some cases, he violated probation and was charged with forgery.

After he was caught on Tuesday, he was taken to a hospital to be checked out.
