A 47-year-old Orlando man was killed early Monday when his vehicle hit a light pole, split in two, and crashed into an auto lot, damaging cars.

The crash occurred about 3:10 a.m. Monday at Colonial Drive and Old Cheney Highway, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The man, whose name hasn't been released, was driving a 1999 Mercedes-Benz eastbound on Colonial Drive when troopers said he lost control of his vehicle.

FHP said the vehicle split into two pieces when it hit the light pole and traveled into an auto lot, where it hit eight vehicles.

The crash remains under investigation.
