The South Daytona Police Department says a group of people used a social media app to try to steal cars.

  • Group used social media app to steal vehicles
  • Teen was shot, man carjacked when meeting woman
  • Both incidents at S. Ridgewood Ave and Big Tree Road

On March 23, a 17-year-old was shot in the stomach during a carjacking attempt.

The teen and his friend, Perry Nida, 27, drove to South Daytona to meet a girl, according to police. While stopped at a red light on South Ridgewood Avenue, an armed man entered their vehicle.

The man told the teen and Nida to get out of the vehicle. The 17-year-old grabbed the gun and began to wrestle with the suspect, police said.   The gun went off and a bullet struck the teen in the stomach.

The next day, Dondre Amador, 21, met a woman at the corner of South Ridgewood Avenue and Big Tree Road, the same intersection.

Amador and the woman, who went by Shammai Taylor, went to a nearby park when four men approached them, pointed a gun and stole his car, according to police. The woman left willingly with the men.

Amador told police he and the woman had been communicating on an app called “Meetme.”
