A man was killed and a woman critically injured on Florida's Turnpike on Friday after they got out of their vehicle to adjust a tarp and were hit by a truck, troopers said.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the pair had pulled over on northbound Florida's Turnpike just south of State Road 417 to adjust a tarp on a trailer they were towing. As they stood on the right shoulder, a 2015 Ford truck driven by Cristian Palmero, 21, of Kissimmee drifted onto the shoulder and hit both of them.

Humberto Cebada, 76, was pronounced dead at the scene. Edith Cebada, 73, was taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

Palmero was not injured.

The crash is under investigation.
