More than a month since Hurricane Irma, one homeowner in Osceola County is still dealing with the aftermath after Shingle Creek in Kissimmee overflowed and flooded her home.

  • Homeowners complain of the long wait from FEMA
  • FEMA says it is still dealing with Irma-related challenges

Kelly Maines says that until just a few days ago, she'd been sleeping in a camper parked in her driveway.

She was waiting on an inspector from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assess the damage to her property so she could start to rebuild.

Maines said she registered with FEMA about a week after Hurricane Irma, and 45 days later, she had an inspection. Maines said it could be another 10 days from now to see whether she's even eligible for the assistance.

While some residents are still waiting on FEMA, others are angry after being turned down by the agency. The agency said it has received about 3 million applicants, and 700,000 of those have been rejected for assistance.

FEMA said it has been dealing with challenges brought on by recent disasters.

The agency said it is doing the best it can with the resources available.
