Two men were arrested in Daytona Beach on Oct. 12, accused of killing a man over sunglasses.

  • Mark Lopes, 34, charged with 2nd degree murder
  • Patrick Murray, 55, charged with 1st degree murder
  • Body of victim found behind business on Beville Road

The suspects were arrested on the scene where they're accused of killing the man.

"I backed my car in right here, and when I got out I could see that trash right there, but his body was just behind the building," said business owner Mary Lynn Hastings, who found the man's body when she got to work Thursday morning.

"I was shaken quite a bit," Hastings continued. "Been here for 20 years, have never had something like this happen before. It's a busy street, it's a safe neighborhood, it's a nice complex."

Investigators said the murder occurred off of Beville Road early Thursday morning. They believe 55-year old Patrick Murray, 34-year-old Mark Lopes and the victim were all homeless and slept on the property.

At some point they were drunk and started fighting. The two suspects killed the man and dragged him behind Hastings' building.

"This argument started over, believe it or not, a pair of sunglasses," said Daytona Beach Police Chief Craig Capri. "So you have a couple people fighting over a pair of sunglasses, which results in one person getting murdered. Our victim was stabbed twice in the chest with a knife."

Hastings said her cameras may have captured what happened, and hopes it helps police.

"He didn't deserve to die," Hastings said. "They deserve some assistance and help, but nobody should be murdered. I'm hoping, so I'll help in any way that I can."

Both Murray and Lopes should face a judge for their first appearance Friday morning.
