Another week, another hole in the road for one West Melbourne neighborhood, caused by the rain over the past few weeks.

  • 2nd hole opens in Sylvia Road, West Melbourne
  • Rain over the past few weeks washing away road
  • Hole should be fixed by Wednesday

The pavement is being ripped away on Sylvia Road again.

Another large hole is blocking the street where it meets Sutton Avenue.

It's 15 by 20 feet wide, and crews are working to repair the area that water washed away underneath. This one is right in front of Jackie Withrow's and Matt Howard's home.

"I was on my way home, just wanting to get home, and ran into this," Withrow said.

"Had to come around this way and made it in," she added, pointing around the corner.

"There's been a divot there," Howard said. "You could tell it would sink in one day. And it did."

Exactly a week ago, a 10 by 12 foot hole was created by a washout underneath Sylvia Street near Henry Avenue, forcing crews to close it down to traffic. One neighbor's driveway was blocked off. It took crews a couple days to fix the pipes.

So it's deja vu for neighbors here. They don't want any more rain and the issues that come with it.

"We will get through it," said Withrow. "Hopefully this will be the last for the year."

"Until next hurricane season," she added with a smirk.

Repairs should be completed by Wednesday.
