Tucked away from a busy waiting room, a doctor sees a tiny patient, one of many who came to a free clinic for back-to-school physicals, and the doctor who is conducting the physicals is doing it on his own dime and time.

Dr. Todd Maugans, a pediatric neurosurgeon at Nemours Children's Hospital, volunteers his time to benefit the nonprofit Shepherd's Hope. Maugans realized a few years ago that it was just a small way to give back.

"Last year, we went to a gala for Shepherd's Hope," Maugans said. "What we discovered was heart-wrenching. There are so many families and so many children who fall through the cracks of the American healthcare system. These familes, these kids ... they need a safety net."

That safety net is Maugans' commitment to giving back. Shepherd's Hope runs a clinic for kids, and other clinics for adults, who are uninsured. The CEO of Shepherd's Hope was actually surprised when she found out about this doctor.

"It was a little mind-blowing to meet him," said Marni Stahlman, the Shepherd's Hope president and CEO. "Here's this brain surgeon ... a brain surgeon! And he's coming here to provide something that's nowhere near what he currently does."

Maugans stresses, though, that it's not that much of a stretch.

"I actually started in family medicine," Maugans said. "These back-to-school physicals really bring me back to my roots in medicine."

You won't see Maugans bragging about his service, though. According to Stahlman, the doctor prefers to stay low-key.

"It's his humbleness and his unassuming nature that makes him so special," Stahlman said. "He doesn't really want or yearn for a lot of recognition. To us, that's what makes him a hero."

Maugans is one of more than 2,000 volunteers with Shepherd's Hope who helped make around 16,000 patient visits happen in 2015.

Maugans brushes off the hero tag and stays humble.

"We're just trying to make a difference in a child's life," Maugans said. "We just want to ensure that they're healthy."
