Part of a popular downtown Titusville park honoring the space program was damaged after a driver plowed through it Thursday night, according to police.

Investigators say Daryl Mitchell, 54, drove his truck through Space View Park and struck several monuments, a light pole and a park bench before speeding off. The park is dedicated to space program workers and astronauts.

Mitchell then lost control of his vehicle and crashed in nearby Sand Point Park, police said. He was arrested and taken to the Brevard County Jail. Mitchell faces charges of reckless driving, criminal mischief and cocaine possession.

Officials say the park likely sustained thousands of dollars in damage.
