While there are growing concerns in many communities after recent shootings by police and attacks on police, Kissimmee is trying to bridge the gap by engaging the community.

With the rising tension between the African-American community and law enforcement across the board, one Kissimmee church hopes to encourage a positive interaction between the two.

Joyce Noel was part of the forum discussion held at the Living Word Church with local religious leaders, officers, and deputies.

“And it’s very depressing to some,” Noel said. She said the recent violent events all over the country are devastating-- spiritually.

Jeff O’Dell the Deputy Chief for the Kissimmee Police Department says they’re encouraging officers to get to know the community on a more personal level.

“We’re emphasizing to get out of the car and have that human interaction with our public and start fostering those relationships,” O’Dell explained.

Religious leaders like pastor Dr. Alonzo Smith hope forums like this one can change the negative perceptions out there.

“We come with an olive branch with the police department,” Smith said. “We’re going to show appreciation for them and that’s how you bridge the gap love does that.”

Noel hopes the trust in uniformed men and women can someday be restored.

“So we also have to look out for them and give them a lot of respect,” Noel added.
