Singer Christina Grimmie died after she was shot at the Plaza Live theater in Orlando late Friday night, according to Orlando police.

  • Grimmie, 22, was at a meet-and-greet after her performance
  • Shooter shot Grimmie, then himself
  • No other injuries were reported

Just before 10:30 p.m. police responded to the Plaza Live theater located at 425 N. Bumby Ave. after receiving reports of shots fired.  When officers arrived they found a man dead and a woman severely injured.

It was later determined that Kevin Loibl, 27, was the gunman. The victim was identified as singer Christina Grimmie, 22.

Police say the one-time contestant on NBC's "The Voice" was meeting fans at a meet-and-greet after performing earlier in the evening at the venue when the shooting occurred. Grimmie's brother reportedly tackled Loibl after he shot his sister.

During the struggle, Loibl reportedly wriggled free and shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

About a 120 people were at the venue at the time of the shooting. Investigators say there were no metal detectors at the venue at the time of the shooting, but there were bag checks in place.

There were no extra off-duty officers working the concert Friday night, police said.

Grimmie was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition. She died a few hours later.

Hours before the performance, Grimmie posted a video to Twitter, encouraging fans to come out to the Orlando show.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina held a news conference on the shooting at 11 a.m.

Loibl is believed to have traveled from another Florida city to Orlando in order to commit the shooting, according to investigators.  Mina would not say which city the gunman traveled from.

Police found two handguns and two additional magazines on the suspect.  They also said he had a large hunting knife with him at the time.

Right now, police say they are working to determine a motive for the shooting. A search is being conducted at the home of the shooter.

John Casebier, Chair, Board of Directors for the Plaza Live Foundation issued the following statement Saturday morning:
