Meet Ward A. Meares, a safety patrol and crossing guard, who every day that school is in session on U.S. 1 in Oak Hill is keeping kids safe as they cross the road.

And no car, truck or student goes by without getting a wave or a hello. Folks even stop just to see him.

There weren't a lot of students on this particular day, but when one approached, there was no less enthusiasm in Ward's greeting.

The principal of Burns Science and Technology Charter School said that Meares means a lot to the school and the children.

"This man is standing here every morning and he is dependable. There has not been a day that I have had anybody else take his place," said Dr. Jan McGee.

Not even a heart attack and open heart surgery could keep Ward away. The students were overwhelmed with compassion for him and sent letters. Before retiring, he'd worked at the school.

"I wanted something to do. Help the school out mostly," said Meares. "And I ain't got nothing to do, I'm retired. I come down here for an hour every day, get to wave at the people, see all the children, and just enjoy doing it."

Meares said he plans on being a crossing guard "until I can't do it no more."

"We're so proud of him so not only is he a hometown hero, he's our school hero and we love him dearly," said McGee.
