A Wildwood man was killed Wednesday afternoon after he was hit by a car while driving his lawnmower, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The deadly incident happened around 1:20 p.m. on County Road 229, north of County Road 228.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Willie Arthur Lawson, 55, of Wildwood, was driving his mower southbound on CR-229 ahead of a vehicle driven by 49-year-old Debra Ann Sesler, of Oxford.

Troopers said Sesler failed to slow down and struck the mower. Lawson was ejected onto the roadway. He was airlifted to Ocala Regional Hospital, where he later died.

Sesler was transported to Leesburg Hospital with minor injuries.

Charges are pending, troopers said.
