Fred has passed over the Cape Verde Islands. After strengthening into a hurricane Monday morning, Fred has since weakened to a tropical storm. More weakening is expected over the next 24 to 48 hours. Fred should become a tropical depression by late Wednesday.

The storm poses no threat to North America.

At 5 p.m. EDT, the center of Tropical Storm Fred was located near latitude 19.4 north, longitude 29.1 west. Fred is moving toward the west-northwest near 13 mph, and this general motion is expected to continue with some decrease in forward speed during the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 50 mph, with higher gusts. Additional weakening is expected during the next 48 hours, and Fred is forecast become a tropical depression by late Wednesday or Thursday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1,003 mb (29.62 inches).
