Two people were killed and three others were injured after a crash Thursday afternoon on Florida's Turnpike, shutting down the northbound lanes in south Osceola County.

William Castillo, 45, of West Palm Beach, was traveling northbound on the Turnpike in a four-door Toyota, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

It remains under investigation if Castillo's vehicle suffered a tire tread separation or a complete tire separation. But as the right rear tire/tread separated, Castillo lost control of the vehicle and traveled into the center median. The vehicle then overturned over the guardrail and ended on its roof in the southbound lanes, troopers said.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. at mile marker 220, about 9 miles south of the next exit at Canoe Creek Service Plaza.

William Castillo and Hector Castillo, 15, also of West Palm Beach, died at the crash scene, troopers said.

Three other people were injured in the crash.

William Castillo Jr., 11, was seriously hurt. Irma Pineda, 80, and Ian Canales, 13, both suffered minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
