Fire riped through a large Brevard County home Wednesday afternoon and it's possible a lightning strike is to blame.

It happened on Brangus Court in Viera just before 4 p.m. as strong storms rolled though the area.

Viewer pictures sent in to News 13 show the fire tearing through the roof and shooting several feet into the air.

Investigators say the homeowner heard a loud thunder clap, then smelled smoke in the home and got out safely.

A video shot by a neighbor shows the fire ripping through the house.

Firefighters arrived on the scene within minutes and began to battle the fire from the inside. But then, part of the roof collapsed.

They had to back out and attack the flames from the outside.

Jonathan Wontz and his family live right next door.

He left for an hour to visit his parents down the street and came back to flames next door.

"When you see those flames shooting up, that's why I'm still uneasy, because you're that close to it. It's frightening," said Wontz.

Agnes Day was visiting friends in the neighborhood and spotted the large plume of smoke.

Her beachside home was struck by lightning three weeks ago and ruined all of her electronics.

She just hopes the couple is insured.

"No home is immune when Mother Nature calls," said Day.

"Thank God they are ok, we're ok," said Wontz.

Wontz says the neighborhood will come together to help the homeowners recover.

Firefighters will monitor the fire overnight to make sure there aren't any hotspots.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause.
