A suspect has been arrested in the burglary of an Islamic center in DeBary, where several hundred dollars in donations were stolen.

Basem Elghazal, 27,  is charged with of grand theft and burglary of an unoccupied structure.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said Elghazal’s fingerprints were lifted off a donation box that was ripped off the wall during the July 4 burglary of the Islamic Center of Deltona located at 410 Summerhaven Drive in DeBary.

Investigators say surveillance video shows the suspect entering the building after hours, tearing the donation box off an upstairs wall, prying it open with his hands and stuffing the contents in his pocket.

Deputies said they learned Elghazal had been to the Islamic Center a day earlier asking for money.

The Sheriff’s Office said Elghazal is also a suspect in a recent theft from a donation box inside the Islamic Center of Daytona Beach. The personnel at the Islamic Center decided not to pursue criminal charges.
