A small plane crashed into a front yard of a Mount Dora home with two passengers on Saturday.

A two seater single prop airplane with a pilot and student took off from a small airport in Eustis off of SR44 around 8:30 a.m.

The pilot reported an engine malfunction, while it was airborne, according to the Mount Dora Police Department.

The plane crashed into a front yard of a home in the Loch Leven subdivision at the corner of Isola Bella Boulevard and Palermo Court. The pilot had attempted an emergency landing, but struck two trees, a stop sign and then crashed into the yard.

The wing span of the plane appeared to be less than 12 feet.

A neighbor told News 13 they heard a loud crash and when they ran outside they saw the small plane in their neighbor's yard.

"We heard something unusual, but we didn't think it was that great. But then we walked outside and saw a plane in the front yard. We were just kind of baffled," said Sandeep Baskar, who lives next door to the house.

After the crash they saw the pilot and the instructor standing near the plane with what appeared to be minor injuries, said the neighbor. Police confirmed that the pilot and the student were able to walk away from the accident without any injuries.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and will be investigating the cause of the crash.
