Montverde Academy is abuzz after having not one, but two of its recent high school grads drafted in the NBA Thursday night. D’Angelo Russell went No. 2 overall to the Los Angeles Lakers while Dakari Johnson was drafted in the second round by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"Everyone’s excited, Facebook was blowing up last night!" said Akshay Naraine, who graduated with Johnson in 2013.

Russell graduated a year later. Both entered the draft early, after going on to successful careers at Kentucky and Ohio State respectively.

“It was cool to see them in here and you just knew they were going to go somewhere. They had 3,000 Twitter followers,” said Green Mountain Pizza Parlor owner Roberto Delverme.

The basketball stars now have more than 200,000 twitter followers combined. They played with Joel Embiid, who was the number 3 draft pick of the Philadelphia 76ers last year.

“When all of them left here we knew they had a chance to be very good, but D’Angelo being No. 2 in the draft, I don’t think too many people saw that one coming,” Assistant basketball coach Rae Miller said.

But no one can be surprised by successes of the program now. The team has won three straight national championships under Head Coach Kevin Boyle.

With 24 national TV appearances in the past four years and all the mentions of Montverde Academy along with the draft, the school is expecting not only to draw better athletes, but more well-rounded students.

"You get that training here, not only on the court but also in the classroom. Having someone like D’Angelo and Dakari be ambassadors for this program is a great honor for us,” said Chris Mitchell, Montverde Academy Director of Development and Governmental Affairs.

As a Laker, Russell will wear the same purple and gold he wore in high school.

“To have his dream realized to be the No. 2 pick in the draft, I think he’s well prepared for it and I think he’s looking forward to being the next big star in LA," Coach Miller said

As the No. 2 pick, Russell is the school’s highest ever draft pick, but he might not hold that distinction for long. Most analysts predict this year’s National Player of the Year from Montverde Academy, Ben Simmons, will be next year’s  No. 1 pick.
