Volusia County officials have closed the L.B. Knox Bridge until further notice because of an electrical malfunction.

Officials said that both drives on the L.B. Knox Bridge, also commonly known as the High bridge Road Bridge, were damaged by an electrical surge. The drives are needed to raise the bridge span.

County officials said it has one replacement drive on hand and will arrange for an emergency procurement of a second drive.

The bridge crosses the Halifax River in northeast Volusia County and is part of the northern leg of the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail, according to Volusia County. On both sides of the bridge message boards will display updated information.

The bridge was built in 1955 and is one of 54 bridges maintained by Volusia County. The county estimates that about 1,100 vehicles cross the bridge each day.
