A man suffered minor injuries after his Porsche slammed into a power pole early Thursday morning in south Melbourne Beach, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Matthew Hicks, 31, was driving his 1991 Porsche convertible around 4 a.m. along the 5500 block of State Road A1A.

Hicks told troopers that he swerved to avoid a dog and then crashed into the pole, igniting it — and the sports car — on fire.

The man was able to exit the car before the blaze.

Hicks suffered a cut to the head, but he refused to go to the hospital, troopers said. He was charged with careless driving and will be responsible for the cost to repair the power pole.
